Burrell Boom is tranquil and charming village that lies on the Belize River. This village was founded in the 18th century. Its name is taken from the iron chains, “booms,” that loggers would extended across the river to trap the mahogany logs that were sent from further upriver. Mahogany was a major trade for Belize. Today, you can still see the chains and anchors displayed in the Burrell Boom Park. This historic village is located near the Community Baboon Sanctuary which has about 2000 Black Howler Monkeys and a highlight of many visitors. Each year the amazing La Ruta Maya race ends in Burrel Boom Village. La Ruta Maya is considered one of the longest canoe races in Central America that brings together professional and amateur paddlers from all over the world who take on the four day grueling challenge of paddling 175 miles of the Belize Old River against rapids and winds.
